St. Margaret Old Girls’ Association

HISTORY OF ST. MARGARET’S SCHOOL, ILESA OLD GIRLS' ASSOCIATION (SMOGA)

It started in 1972. The idea to form St Margaret’s Old Girls Association was conceived at the burial of one of the old girls named Iyabo Eboda when it was observed that the turnout was impressive.   The 1st meeting was held in Prof and Mrs. Ojo’s house at the Staff quarters in University of Lagos which became the base for a long time. The pioneer members include Mrs. Adebisi Ojo nee Fagbulu, Mrs. Remi Adebiyi, Mrs. Julie Olatunji nee Olamijulo of 1958 set to mention few. In 1973, the younger ones in the persons of Mrs. Joko Fatubarin nee Adeyemi, Mrs. Flora Ajayi nee Dawodu,Mrs Agbeke Ogunsanwo nee Kareem joined.

Later it was decided that the meeting be rotated on house to house basis which was done for some years. Mrs. Olatunji later gave a classroom at Methodust girls high school Yaba to hold the meetings before it was moved back to Mrs. Ojo’s house. Prof Abiola Ojo became a life patron till death. The old girls came together to have a reunion party at the Unilag staff club, the turnout was large which was a boost to the association. Thereafter Mrs. Remi Adebiyi became the first President, Mrs. Adebisi Ojo the secretary who was the anchor head of the association and Mrs. Joko Fatubarin nee Adeyemi the Assistant secretary. Later the meeting place moved to Mrs. Adebiyi’s house as Mrs. Ojo traveled overseas for a long time. After some years meetings could not hold until Mrs. Ojo came and resuscitated it and a new exco was put in place. Mrs. Ojo was elected President while Mrs. Fatubarin became the secretary. Since then the Association progressed steadily.

In 1993, Mrs. Bimpe Uwadia nee Shittu invited Mrs. Fatubarin to Agege their meeting venue. This comprises those who left St Margaret’s from 1970 upwards Mrs. Fatubarin informed the meeting of the 58 set which formed their own association but suggested the 70 set with the older set be merged to become one. After the merger a new exco was formed where Mrs. Bolade Thomas nee Orelugba was made the president, Mrs. Bimpe Uwadis became the secretary and Mrs. Fatubarin the financial Secretary and Mrs. Fijimi Adebayo the treasurer from the late 90s to 2019.

The Lagos branch was divided into 3 zones for accessibility to members headed by welfare officers. The President at a stage was using her office at Opic Plaza, Bank Anthony way as meeting point for the executive while Mrs. Ojo with her husband whose passion for the association was unrivaled volunteered their house as the meeting venue because of the venue centrality. Initially the new year party was always held at Mrs. Thomas’s eatery but later in the Ojo’s house with a great support from the family.

In 2006, it was agreed that the Association should honor some old students.

In 2007, Mrs. Bolaji Oyeleye nee Omole was the Chairperson of the 1st fundraising and award ceremony held Eko hotel and suite courtesy Mrs. Cecelia Ibru. Among those honored are Mrs. Ibru, Mrs. Lawrence, Pro and Mrs. Ojo, Mrs. Bolade Thomas and Mrs. Bimpe Uwadia. The success of it made the Association agreed to be holding it every 5 years. The money realized was used to renovate dilapidated buildings in the school. Later Mrs. Ibru donated a building which was meant to house the ICT Centre.

Another Fundraising was held in 2012 under the chairmanship of Mrs. Yemisi Adesuyan nee Akinlotan while that of 2017 was chaired by Mrs. Dayo Akinyemi nee Akinleye. More renovation was embarked on after the fundraising ceremony. In 1993 Mrs. Grace Odusanwo with the help of the then Miss Adesola sourced for needed books to equip the school library.

In 2019 Mrs. Uwadia became the President of the association. In 2020 because of Covid19 pandemics the Association meetings have been virtual but the good thing is that the Association is waxing stronger and stronger with increase in enrollment in the number of members!
