SOHCAHTOA Foundation has awarded scholarships to over 100 undergraduates from various tertiary institutions across Nigeria as part of its first-ever initiative aimed at enhancing educational opportunities within the country and across Africa. The program, which received an overwhelming 18,000 applications, culminated in the selection of a distinguished group of students from Nigeria’s six geo-political zones. This scholarship effort is a pivotal part of the foundation’s mission to foster educational development and create lasting social impact.
Co-founder of SOHCAHTOA, Mrs. Solape Fayemi, announced the scholarship recipients during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, emphasizing the foundation’s commitment to educational empowerment. According to Fayemi, the undergraduate scholarship program is designed to support students specifically in Nigerian public tertiary institutions, reinforcing the foundation’s belief in the transformative power of education. She highlighted that the scholarship initiative is just one aspect of SOHCAHTOA’s broader educational agenda.
“Through initiatives like this scholarship and our upcoming Back-to-School drive, we aim to provide essential resources to students and pupils who may not have access to such support otherwise,” said Fayemi. “While the scholarship focuses on undergraduates in public tertiary institutions, the Back-to-School program will help students in public primary and secondary schools by providing essential items such as books, writing materials, shoes, and bags.”
The Back-to-School drive, which is scheduled to launch soon, seeks to provide basic resources for students across various public schools. Fayemi explained that both programs aim to alleviate financial burdens on students and their families, enabling them to pursue quality education. “This foundation extends beyond basic empowerment initiatives. Our goal this year was to reach 100 deserving beneficiaries, and we’re planning to expand in the coming academic year to reach even more students,” she added.
Each recipient of the SOHCAHTOA scholarship will receive an annual stipend of N250,000 for tuition fees until they complete their degree programs. Fayemi expressed that this financial support is intended to provide students with a stable foundation to pursue their academic goals and achieve success. She urged the beneficiaries to maintain high academic standards, noting that renewal of the scholarship each year will depend on their academic performance. “We require beneficiaries to maintain good grades and submit their academic results at the end of each session. This program is an investment in their future, and we hope they will make the most of it.”
Fayemi also used the opportunity to call on other private organizations to join hands in supporting educational development across Nigeria. She stressed that collaboration between the government and private sectors is essential to bridge the educational gaps in society. “The government alone cannot achieve this; private organizations can and should play a role in positively impacting society. We must all leverage our resources to contribute to societal growth,” she stated.
